Happy New Year! January Calendar

You are Listening, but are you Hearing

You may be listening but are you hearing? What are the noises competing in your ears?

I was recently listening to a podcast in my car and when I parked at the store it automatically switched to my wireless earbud. These little devices we can wear in our ears to listen to a phone conversation, music or a educational podcast are quite amazing.

As I walked across the parking lot I could hear her voice discussing the Word of God in the podcast teaching quiet clearly.

When I entered the store there was a plethora of noises, clattering of carts, people talking, shoes clicking on the tile floor, the intercom all made a lot of “background sounds”. So much so that I no longer could hear the voice in my earbud.

I would need to turn the volume up on my phone, but that is bad for my hearing. So I had to make the choice to turn it up or listen later.

This reminded me of listening to God’s voice and how the sounds (good and bad) drown out the ability to hear God’s small still voice down in our spirit even when we think we are listening

He does not shout. He does not pound us to hear Him. His quite still voice is gentle and requires our attention. Sometimes it requires our undivided attention other times we can hear Him in the middle of a crowded room.

I find that in the crowded room He is likely to give me direction for the moment or a warning for protection.

When we are seeking life direction we need to find the stillness and place of meditation.

In 2 Kings 19:12, the voice of God was in a whisper to Elijah.

As we seek the direction of God for the new year of 2025, set apart a time to focus on the Lord. Review His names and the great things He has done. And listen to the direction and write what you hear in a journal.

For the month of January we will review through verses of scripture about direction and beginnings.

But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. - Philippians 3:13-14
